Matt Munoz

Matt Munoz has been covering the California entertainment scene for over twenty years, from the newsroom to the radio/podcast studio to the frontman on stage. Since launching his career as a professional musician and bandleader for popular Latin ska reggae band Mento Buru, Matt is known a trusted community voice in the California music game and multimedia journalism scene.  

Munoz began his entertainment career by working in L.A.’s Latin alternative music scene before joining Real Talk. During this period, Matt had the opportunity to work as a personal assistant in Hollywood and dabble in production roles during Grammy season. The Bakersfield Californian hired him in 2005 to assist in shaping the news company’s unique media and multicultural brands.

During his time there, he kept up with local community happenings and brought in groundbreaking new ideas to the historic family-owned newspaper. His writing and web-based media work has been recognized by awards and accolades over the years.

Munoz co-hosted the weekly local entertainment show ‘Bakotopia Radio’ for iHeartRadio and created the ‘Bakotunes’ podcast, which is one of Bakersfield’s first locally produced entertainment podcasts still heard today. His career includes lead roles in media and communications in the county government, as well as extensive freelance writing.

Matt is a graduate of California State University Bakersfield. Mento Buru is also celebrating 30 years of making music and advocating for music and arts education in our schools. He’s also a devoted husband to his amazing wife Miranda and a dad blessed with three awesome kids Kaitlyn, Mark, and Zachary.
